Look Back

Look Back

Last year, we started schooling at University of Kelaniya. When we looked at the subjects, we had to get registered for a GNCT subject that was compulsory in both first year and second year. But not including any credits and mentioning that everyone has to pass the subject to obtain the degree. It was well known as Personal progress development.

We leant many things from this PPD session not only to academic and university life but also life.

It was a different subject module with comparing other subject modules. We leant many things, we enjoyed team works, we got knowledge and we collected many unforgettable memories and experience because of this session during two years. We were developed many skills for our lives.

In conclusion we should say the PPD is the most important and essential subject module for undergraduate to collect knowledge, life experience, develop life skills and enjoy the university life externally to the academic works. We should thank for our Miss Sarasi Senadeera and university authority to create such subject module and those sessions.

Out Bound Training Program

Naval and Maritime Academy ?

Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA) plays the most prominent role by imparting professional training for both Officers and Senior / Junior ratings in Sri Lanka Navy (SLN). The Academy is situated within the picturesque Naval Dockyard, Trincomalee. Trincomalee is considered as one of the best natural harbours in the world with rich history of maritime affiliation.

Out Bound Training Program

We had an unforgettable life experience from the out of university environment for as a ppd session which is coordinated by Madam Miss Sarasi and government. We had to participate leadership training programme in Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee. It was a great experience during our university life.

In the evening, we had a camp fire on beach along with a talent show. The next day we had our breakfast around 7 a.m. Then we were grouped and given a task to go through the jungle with only a map and a compass. It was a thrilling experience. Then we visited the naval museum.

In the afternoon we were arranged a best lunch by the naval officers. Then our training programme was over. We has great , amaizing and unforgettable experience from there. We should thank for that naval base and offices for giving such program to us..

Table Ethics and Etiquette

Table manners

We went to Sri lanaka institute of hotel management and Tourism as a filed visit. The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management (SLITHM) is the only Government approved premier Institute in Sri Lanka, which was established by the Government in 1964 to train young men and women in the complex field of Hospitality and Travel Industry.

At informal meals, place the napkin in your lap immediately upon seating. During formal occasions, before unfolding the napkin, wait for the hostess to remove her napkin from the table and unfold it in her lap.

  • Place the napkin in your lap upon seating.
  • When leaving the table temporarily, put the napkin on your chair.
  • At the meal's end, fold your napkin and place it to the left of your place setting
  • Hold your fork in your left hand, tines downward.
  • Hold your knife in your right hand, an inch or two above the plate.
  • Extend your index finger along the top of the blade.
  • Use your fork to spear and lift food to your mouth.

And we learnt lot of things on that session.

Latest Software Engineering Trends

Technology is rapidly changing and as Software Engineering undergraduates we must be updated about what’s happening around us. Thankfully, the mobile company “hSenid” gave us opportunity learn about the new trends in software industry. To give this opportunity hSenid HR came and he did a great lecture about this.

In early there was communication with people. Then started communication with hardware and live ware. After that there was hardware to hardware communication. It introduce called IOT(Internet Of Things). Upcoming trend is communication with pets.

Automotive
We are going to see many interesting developments in this industry due to the major disruption started by Tesla. Obviously, we will see the launch of many more self-driving cars, but we will also see the entire connected car system become “smart.” Expect your car to predict the failure of a part and suggest some convenient times for you to go the mechanic, who will have the replacement part ready for you!

Big Data
Three big trends have shaped application development over the last several years: cloud, agile, and DevOps. In 2017, we’re going to see these trends hit data in a big way. We already see the effect of cloud in architectures that separate compute and data. Cloud-based blob stores like S3 have become the new data lake for many organizations. Agile practices will increasingly influence the work of data engineers and data scientists, enabling them to benefit from fast feedback cycles and continuous delivery of value. Finally, we’ll see database administrators leverage DevOps practices to automate deployment and orchestration of their data services, assisted by offerings like Pivotal Cloud Foundry’s data services that enable developer self-service through automation.

Cloud
At Bloomberg, our position in the global capital markets pushes us to understand the unique requirements of extreme network and systems availability. However, many companies across a diverse set of industries do not yet (fully) appreciate these requirements. As more and more organizations move their mission-critical systems to the cloud, we anticipate there may be a number of large scale incidents in 2017 (e.g., service outages, DDOS attacks, etc.) that cause businesses to realize the importance of implementing a multi-cloud strategy. It is our belief that enterprises will need to spread their chips around and utilize multiple cloud providers to achieve best-of-breed availability.

Data Science
In 2017, enterprises will increasingly migrate away from centralized, shared-service data science organizations in favor of embedding data scientists directly in business units and even making data scientists part of software development project teams. This will lead to better software that leverages data science to support “intelligent” features, such as personalized recommendations and intelligent automation.

Virtual Reality

For Virtual Reality (VR), 2017 is the year that content comes into focus. Hardware manufacturers will incentivize content creators and there will be increased investment in VR content led in large part by Asian-based investors. On the hardware front, manufacturers like HTC, Google, Oculus, and others will continue to iterate on their VR technology with a focus on computing efficiency and increased mobility.

Art of Living

THE ART OF LIVING

Dr. Don Ajith Rohana Colonne is a student of Ananda College (Colombo), Thurstan College (Colombo) and Ananda Sastralaya (Kotte) in Sri Lanka. From 1974 to 1975, he attended the Loveland High School in Colorado, USA under the American Field Service (AFS) Cultural Exchange Scholarship Programme and graduated from there.

Upon his return to Sri Lanka in 1975, he entered the University of Colombo and got a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1979. Subsequently, he obtained the Master of Business Administration Degree from the Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura in 1994 and the Master of Arts in Economics Degree from the University of Colombo in 1996. In 2014 he obtained the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the International University of America.

DR. AjithE Collonne's lecture on art of living  is the most interesting lecture that i ever heard.AS he said we live in this word because of three reasons.

1)Happiness
2)Entertainment
3)Enjoyment

According to him When we Think about art of living - there is an art to everything and living well is no exception. Of any art, this would be the one to master since it encompasses all the others.  The art of living well is to make your life an expression of who you are , what you believe, and your hopes, dreams and desires. Of course, to create your life as a work of art is an ongoing, evolving, and creative endeavor. And so it should be.

Happiness

1.    Appreciate the nature

He discussed  how he enjoyed birds signing in his bunglow working in the military firm. And how beauty is his village daraniyagala and came to know it gets the highest rainfall in sri lanka

2.    You have to be a giat tree not a normal one or a vine which destroys the giant trees.

3.    He said in enjoying nature just take photographs and leave nothing behind its really heart touching.

4.    Have to enjoy the life with music and other stuff

5.    Need a time for relaxing
·       While his discussions he shared his experience in the National Intelligence services which he is currently supplying to the country. And how he came to his job

SUCCESS

1.Positive thinking
-Gave the example of half filled water glass it was quiet useful and how to think positively.
2. Self Confidence-Bill Clinton
3. Dedication with a runners example
4. Ready to face unexpected falldowns and should be careful with the people who are close to us.
5. Strategic thinking
6. Having the best Knowledge
7. Superstitions – How these things can be used to win the life and he shared his personal experience how to motivate ourself using those things and having mental relief.

We can make an art of living well by expressing ourselves, by being open and receptive to new experiences, and by living each moment to the fullest. We need only decide to do so.
So finally  we must thank a lot for Dr. Ajith Collonne for  conducting us a such a interesting amazing lecture on " Art of living" by combining his own life experiences 😌😌😌😌😌

Beauty Of University Of Kelaniya

About university of Kelaniya

The University of Kelaniya has its origin in the historic Vidyalankara Pirivena, founded in 1875 by Ratmalane Sri Dharmaloka Thera as a Centre of learning for Buddhist monks.
With the establishment of modern universities in Sri Lanka in the 1940s and 1950s, the Vidyalankara Pirivena became the Vidyalankara University in 1959, later the Vidyalankara Campus of the University of Ceylon in 1972, and, ultimately, the University of Kelaniya in 1978.
The University of Kelaniya has pioneered a number of new developments in higher education. It was one of the first universities to begin teaching science in Sinhala and the first to restructure the traditional Arts Faculty into three faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences, and Commerce and Management And also Computing faculty.
It has several departments not generally found in the Sri Lankan University system and some Kelaniya innovations have been adopted subsequently by other universities. These include the Departments of mathematics ,Physics, Chemistry and Microbiology in the Faculty of Science; Departments of Linguistics, Fine Arts, Modern Languages and Hindi in the Faculty of Humanities; and Mass Communication and Library and Information Sciences in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The University of Kelaniya is the First State Green University and it has Beautiful Places.

I like to say I also part of University of Kelaniya..

Cancer

One of Current Major Problem in the World

Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. Not all tumors are cancerous; benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body.
Cancer is the name given to a collection of related diseases. In all types of cancer, some of the body’s cells begin to divide without stopping and spread into surrounding tissues.

Cancer can start almost anywhere in the human body, which is made up of trillions of cells. Normally, human cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old or become damaged, they die, and new cells take their place.

When cancer develops, however, this orderly process breaks down. As cells become more and more abnormal, old or damaged cells survive when they should die, and new cells form when they are not needed. These extra cells can divide without stopping and may form growths called tumors.

Many cancers form solid tumors, which are masses of tissue. Cancers of the blood, such as leukemias, generally do not form solid tumors.

Cancerous tumors are malignant, which means they can spread into, or invade, nearby tissues. In addition, as these tumors grow, some cancer cells can break off and travel to distant places in the body through the blood or the lymph system and form new tumors far from the original tumor.

Unlike malignant tumors, benign tumors do not spread into, or invade, nearby tissues. Benign tumors can sometimes be quite large, however. When removed, they usually don’t grow back, whereas malignant tumors sometimes do. Unlike most benign tumors elsewhere in the body, benign brain tumors can be life threatening.

How Cancer Arises

Cancer is a genetic disease—that is, it is caused by changes to genes that control the way our cells function, especially how they grow and divide.

Genetic changes that cause cancer can be inherited from our parents. They can also arise during a person’s lifetime as a result of errors that occur as cells divide or because of damage to DNA caused by certain environmental exposures. Cancer-causing environmental exposures include substances, such as the chemicals in tobacco smoke, and radiation, such as ultraviolet rays from the sun. (Our Cancer Causes and Prevention section has more information.)

Each person’s cancer has a unique combination of genetic changes. As the cancer continues to grow, additional changes will occur. Even within the same tumor, different cells may have different genetic changes.

In general, cancer cells have more genetic changes, such as mutations in DNA, than normal cells. Some of these changes may have nothing to do with the cancer; they may be the result of the cancer, rather than its cause.

"Drivers" of Cancer

The genetic changes that contribute to cancer tend to affect three main types of genes—proto-oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, and DNA repair genes. These changes are sometimes called “drivers” of cancer.

Proto-oncogenes are involved in normal cell growth and division. However, when these genes are altered in certain ways or are more active than normal, they may become cancer-causing genes (or oncogenes), allowing cells to grow and survive when they should not.

Tumor suppressor genes are also involved in controlling cell growth and division. Cells with certain alterations in tumor suppressor genes may divide in an uncontrolled manner.

DNA repair genes are involved in fixing damaged DNA. Cells with mutations in these genes tend to develop additional mutations in other genes. Together, these mutations may cause the cells to become cancerous.

As scientists have learned more about the molecular changes that lead to cancer, they have found that certain mutations commonly occur in many types of cancer. Because of this, cancers are sometimes characterized by the types of genetic alterations that are believed to be driving them, not just by where they develop in the body and how the cancer cells look under the microscope.

Cancer Treatment

There are many types of cancer treatment. The types of treatment that you have will depend on the type of cancer you have and how advanced it is. Some people with cancer will have only one treatment. But most people have a combination of treatments, such as surgery with chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. You may also have immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or hormone therapy.

Clinical trials might also be an option for you. Clinical trials are research studies that involve people. Understanding what they are and how they work can help you decide if taking part in a trial is a good option for you.

When you need treatment for cancer, you have a lot to learn and think about. It is normal to feel overwhelmed and confused. But, talking with your doctor and learning all you can about all your treatment options, including clinical trials, can help you make a decision you feel good about. Our Questions to Ask Your Doctor About Treatment may help.

(Last day i did not attend PPD session..I went to Maharagama Cancer Hospital with my mother to see a patient.so i think to write Article about Cancer)

Barter puzzle

Barter Puzzle

“Not another dumb company team building game,” says the displeased employee. Ouch. When this thought crosses your employees’ minds, you can pretty much throw the benefits of team bonding games out the window.

The Barter Puzzle

Time: 1 – 2 hours

Number of Participants: Seven Members

Tools Needed: Different jigsaw puzzles for each group

Rules:
Have everyone break off into small, equal-sized groups. Give each group a different jigsaw puzzle with the same difficulty level. The goal is to see which group can complete their jigsaw puzzle the fastest. However! Some pieces will be mixed around in other group’s jigsaw puzzles. It’s up to the team to come up with a way to get those pieces back — either through negotiating, trading, exchanging team members, etc. Whatever they decide to do, they must decide as a group.

Objective: This activity will rely heavily on problem solving and leadership skills. Some team members might stand out and some might stand back, but it’s important to remember that the entire team must come to a consensus before a decision is made.

Finally Our team got 2nd place from that game and we archived that target work as team.

Team building activities and games are supposed to be not only educational, but also enjoyable. They help the team learn about each other.

Outcomes for each person ,
                                 1.Thinking
                                 2.Decision Making skills
                                 3.Works as a group
                                 4.Communicate with others
                                 5.Bargain skills
                                 6.Solves problems
                                 7.Use English Language
                                 8.and has Fun.
